Having started my teaching career in the US and later taught in the UK, I’ve had the opportunity to gain international teaching qualifications and experience different high-quality educational systems. Being exposed to different approaches to teaching and learning has really shaped the teacher I am today and influenced what I value most in the classroom.
One of those values is having high expectations for every student. I believe students achieve more when expectations are clear, learning is carefully structured and teachers are well prepared. At the same time, students need to feel supported and confident enough to challenge themselves, think critically and learn from their mistakes. This balance between challenge and support is also reflected in our school motto: “Think deeply, care boldly, act globally.”
This is also one of the reasons I particularly value being part of SIS. We have an experienced, like-minded academic team, with many teachers bringing their own international backgrounds and perspectives. This creates plenty of opportunities to exchange ideas, learn from one another and continue developing professionally.
Just as importantly, that sense of support extends beyond the classroom. One aspect of SIS that really stands out to me is the importance our founder places on staff wellbeing. Teaching can be demanding, and working in a school that genuinely values and supports its teachers makes a real difference. I believe that when teachers feel valued and supported, they are in the best position to give their best to their students.
